Facts:
Bayern Munich are the first team to benefit from home advantage in the final since the Champions League was formed in the 1992-93 season.
This will be the sixth meeting between English and German teams in the Champions League final – Bayern won the first encounter with a 2-0 victory over Leeds in 1975 but English teams have won all the others including a dramatic late 2-1 win for Manchester United in 1999.
The last time the two teams met in the Champions League was in the quarter-finals seven years ago and many of the same players will feature including Chelsea’s Frank Lampard, Didier Drogba, and Petr Cech (John Terry also played but is suspended for the final). On that occasion, Chelsea beat Bayern 4-2.
This is the first time since Liverpool beat AC Milan in 2007 that the final will be contested between two teams that are not reigning champions of their countries. Bayern finished second in the Bundesliga while Chelsea could only manage sixth place.
This is Bayern’s ninth appearance in a European Cup/Champions League final – they won the trophy for three successive years between 1974-76 and again in 2001.
Chelsea are playing in only their second Champions League Final – after losing to Manchester United on penalties in 2008.
